The finite element techniq e sing Mohr-Co lomb elasto plastic soil behavior model is applied to the analysis of interaction mechanism between the old and new em- bankments in thewidening of highway embankments on soft fo ndation soilswith Plaxis, a geotechniq e-tailored commercial software. Concl sions are gained that the constr ction of new embankment ind ces differential set- tlement between the center and the sho lder of old embankment, then pavement cracking happens and the grade of highway is debased. At the end, recommendations are made for design-constr ction based on the re- s lts of n merical sim lation.
