AbstractFortheincreasingdigitalimagedata,theimageinformationavailableisonlyusefulifonecanaccessitefficiently,sothereisagrowingneedforeffectiveimageretrieval,whichcaneffectivelystoreandmanagetheimagedatabaseandquicklyretrieveadesiredimageaccordingtotheuser’sneeds.Theimagecomprisestextandpixelinformation,textinformationuseskeywordstodepictthevisualcontentofimage,andpixelinformationreflectstheobjectivevisualcontenttheimagecontained.Textbasedimageretrieval(TBIR)needtobemarkedbykeywords,whichexpenseslargeandsubjectiveambiguity,andautomaticannotationbasedonmachinelearningexistsitsownlimitations,whereascontentbasedimageretrieval(CBIR)canovercometheproblem.SoCBIRisoneofthehotshotsintheinformationretrievalfield.Thethesisfirstdiscussesontwoparts:oneisbasicknowledgeaboutCBIR,theotherisweberlocaldescriptor(WLD)andtherelevantlocaldescriptorweberlocalbinarypattern(WLBP).Thenwedoresearchonimageretrievalapproachinthedirectionofthelow-levelfeatureextractionandregionbasedimageretrieval,combiningitwithWLDlocalfeature.Theresearchworkcanbesummarizedasfollows:Fortheexistingproblemsofthetraditionalblockcolorhistogramandcombinedwithhumanvisualcharacteristics,twoimageretrievalmethodsbasedontheuniformregionareputout,oneisWLDimageblockclassificationweightedimageretrievalmethod,whichconcernedaboutdifferenthumanvisualattentionondifferentblocktypes;theotheroneisuniformellipticalringpartitionmethod,whichpaysmoreattentiononthevisualcenterandhasdifferentattentiondegreeondifferentregions.BothWLDimageblockclassificationweightedimageretrievalmethodanduniformellipticalringpartitionmethodarebasedontheintegratedcolorandtexturefeature,andweintegratecolorandtexturefeaturewithoutextrainternalnormalizationorexternalnormalization.IIThedimensionsofWLDandWLBPlocaldescriptorarehigh,whichlimitstheirapplicationinimageretrieval.TheimprovedWLD/LBPdescriptorcanuselessfeaturedimensionbutensuretheretrievalefficiency.Lastwetestontwoimagedatabasesusingdifferentsimilaritymetrics,andalltheresultsshowthattheimprovedWLD/LBPd
