He won the reputation as a novelist and anti-culture warrior in the 1960s Psychedelic Movement which turned the Beat Generation to Hippies.Ken Kesey was born on September 17, 1935 in La Junta, Colorado. After high school, he entered the Oregon State University and was graduated with a bachelor degree in speech and communication in 1957. During these university days, he began to write plays, poems and novels. In 1958, he was enrolled in the non-degree creative writing program at Stanford University, where he volunteered to take part in the experiment about chemical products of Psychology Specialty at the suggestion of Vic Lowell to whom his novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was dedicated. At the end of this experiment, he started to take a part-time job in the Victor hospital of Menlo Park as an assistant of a psychiatrist. In the mental hospital, through talking with the patients, Ken Kesey found that the patients were not actually insane. They were taken as the mentally ill, because they did not fit the conventional ideas of how people were supposed to act and behave. This experience exerted great influence on Ken Kesey, for it provided him with literary materials and inspired him to writ
