I. can / could 表否定的猜测 can’t / couldn’t do 现在或将来不可能… e.g. He can’t / couldn’t be her father; he’s too young. can’t / couldn’t be doing 现在不可能正在… e.g. He can’t / couldn’t be waiting for us at the stop. can’t / couldn’t have done （过去）不可能… e.g. I can’t / couldn’t have lost my keys. I never drop things. She can’t have caught the 9:10 train, for she only left her house at 9:15. 比较：--May I see the secretary? -- Try. But she may not want to see anyone. can / could用在疑问句中表猜测 e.g. Can / Could it be John? Could the bank have made a mistake? e.g. This pen looks mine, yet it isn’t. Whose can / could it be? （可能）会是谁的呢？ Where can she have gone? could have done过去能够做某事而没做 e.g. He went on foot, but he could have taken a bus. e.g. I was five minutes late, otherwise I could have caught the train. He may / might have failed in the examination. might have done 过去可能发生某事但未发生 e.g. You were stupid to try climbing up there. You might have killed yourself. e.g. It is a good thing you didn’t lend him the money. You might never have got it back. may用于目的/让步状语从句中，表示可以或可能 e.g. We work hard that we may live in comfort. e.g. Whatever may happen (= Whatever happens), it doesn’t concern us. iii. must must表肯定的猜测 must do 现在一定会 e.g. He must know her phone number. He has had no sleep for
