President Kennedy’s Inaugural Address A vow president of the United states is inducted[使正式就职;引入] into office on inauguration[就职典礼] day, which occurs on January 20 of the year following the election The formal ceremony always includes a speech by the new President. The inaugural address of John F. Kennedy, the thirty-fifth President of the United States, was delivered[发表] on January 20,1961,in front of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. the tone and phrasing[措词;表达] of this often-quoted speech clearly reflect the dedication[奉献;忘我精神] and idealism[理想主义] that characterized [表现;刻画的特性] the young president. We observe[庆祝] today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedom-symbolizing[象征] an end as well as[既…又;不只…也同样的] a beginning-signifying[表示;象征],renewal[更新;恢复]as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty[万能的] God the same solemn[庄严] oath[誓言] our forebears[祖先;祖宗] prescribed[指定] nearly a century and three-quarters ago. The world is very different now. for man holds in his mortal[世间的;人类的] .hands the power to abolish[取消;完全破坏] all forms of human poverty[贫困] and all forms of human life And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue[争论中] around the glove-the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity[宽宏大量] of the state, but from the hand of God. We dare not forget today that we are the heirs[继承人] of that first revolution.
