William Butler Yeats 1865-1939 I. LIFE OF YEATS 1865 born in Dublin. Father a painter 1865-1876 Sligo 1887 moved to London, met Morris and Wilde 1889 met Maud Gonne, who was to have a significant and lasting effect on his poetry and his life thereafter. 1891 co-founded the Rhymers’ Club, influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Spenser and Shelley 1896 met Lady Gregory and J. M. Synge, concentrating on Irish tradition I. LIFE OF YEATS 1904 President of the Irish National Dramatic Society, then founded the Abbey Theatre. Write 20 + plays from 1904 to the end of his life. 1916 The Easter Rising in Dublin, had its strong impact on the poet. 1917 settled down in Galway, Ireland. Yeats’ tower. 1922 Appointed a senator of the new Irish Free State 1923 won the Nobel Prize for literature 1880s amd 1890s to the 1930s a long long poetic career.
