In the movie Dark Matter, there are something about the culture shock between China and American. For example, LiuXing said the students in China can just respect the teachers and they can never challenge the teachers. And in this movie, at beginning, Liu always called his teacher Mr. Professor Ruise, but the professor wanted Liu to call him Jack. We all know that in China, we call “teacher”, but in U.S. the students always call their teacher his name… Then let’s analyze the movie with details. When we come into an exotic environment, we usually feel uncomfortable. And we will experience some different stages of culture shock. The first one is excitement phase. In the film, when LiuXing first come to US, he was very excited. And he decided to work hard to gain reputation for his family. He worked all night to do his research. The second one is the disenchantment phase. After a few days, LiuXing started to miss his parents and his motherland. He began feeling uncomfortable and maybe somehow confused. The third one is beginning resolution phase. LiuXing decided to continue his hard-working and tried to get the PHD and win a wonderful job. He also made some foreign friends. The last is effective functioning phase. What a pity, LiuXing didn’t pass the final test and didn’t get his PHD. He felt depressed and killed his professor and colleagues. At last, he killed himself. In probing the reasons for the tragedies in the film, we should pay great attention to the conflicts during interaction between new immigrations and local people. Becau
