AbstractSTMisapowerfultoolforthestudyofsupramolecularstructureonthesurfaceandattheinterface.UsingSTMasamainmethod,theeffectofmolecularsymmetry,substitution,substrateandvariousfactorsonsufaceassemblingwasinvestigated.Wecanobtainmanyaspectsofinformation,suchasmoleculararrangementintheassemblingmonolayer,orientationandtheregistrationbetweensupramolecularlayerandsubstratelattice,furthermorewecanalsoobtaininformationonthedynamicssuchastherearrangementofmoleculardomainsandsoon.ThoughabundantSTMresearchesontwo-dimensionalassemblingoffunctionalorganicmoleculeswerecarriedout,alargenumberofsuchworksarefocusedonone-dimensionaloligomers.Onlyinrecentyearsassemblingofmorecomplicatedolygomersarereported.InthisthesiswechosetostudytheinterfacialassemblingofaseriesofAEMmoleculestoclarifytheeffectofsterichindanceontheπ-conjugatedcoreonmolecularassemblingstructureandstudythemechanismofmolecularrecognitionatthesolid/liquidinterface.Wehavedesignedandsynthetizedaseriesofarylene–ethynylenemacrocycles(AEM)withbenzene，naphthaleneandanthraceneassubstitutentsatthecenterofthethreeedgesofthetriangularAEMcore.Thesemoleculeshaveexactlyidenticalperipheryalkylsubstituents.Nevertheless,becausethedifferenceofmolecularcorestructure,thesemoleculesshowdifferentassemblybehaviorattheTCB/graphiteinterface.OurexperimentsshowthatAEM-BandAEM-Nformthreedifferentpatterns,respectively,whileAEM-Aonlyformsonetypeofpacking.DuetothesterichindranceAEM-NformssignificantlydifferentassemblingpatternsincomparewithAEM-B.However,sincetheeffectofsterichindrancecreatedbythenaphthaleneandanthracenesubstitutentsontheinterdigitationofalkylchainsarenearlythesame,theassemblingstructureformedbyAEM-AisidenticaltooneofthethreepatternsofAEM-N.WehavealsodiscoveredconcentrationdependenceoftheassemblingbehaviorofAEMs.However,thepackingdensityofthedifferentpatternsofAEM-BandAEM-Narenearlyidentical,sowecannotexplaintheconcentrationdependencewithdifferenceinpackingdensity.Thisisdifferentfromthatreportedpreviouslyandneedstobeinvestigatedfurt
