Fast urban development has also brought many potential troubles, and urban flooding is one of the most serious. As urbanization is predicted to be a continuing momentum in the 21st century, the central government of China rates urban flood prevention as a key task in future disaster prevention and mitigation strategy. This paper gave a brief introduction about urban flood situation in China, analyzed challenges in urban flood prevention and risk management, and introduced adaptive strategies and countermeasures that China take for comprehensive urban flood management Key words: Urban flood disaster, flood management strategies, countermeasures 1 Introduction China suffers from both floods and drought disasters due to its specific geological location and climate. Floods have been recognized as the most severe natural hazards in China, which happen in many places and frequently, claiming heavy losses. Two third territory of China is subject to floods of different type and density. Since 1949, over 50 floods have hit different parts of the country. Average annual economic loss caused by flooding since 1990 is about 1.5% GDP of the year. This number is dropping significantly in recent years, but still much higher than average level of developed countries. City is usually a regional economic hub where most people live; therefore floods in such a place could be more threatening and costly. How to minimize losses caused by floods
