Chapter One IntroductionBackground of the studyThe leading position of reading in second language acquisition (SLA) has been widely acknowledged, and the cultivation of reading ability still takes the top priority in syllabuses, like “Non-English Major Graduate English Program of Instruction” (1993) and “College English Program of Instruction”(revised edition) (1999). The use of reading strategies is regarded as being conducive to the cultivation of reading ability and it’s also the assurance of reading efficiency and independent reading ability. With the advent of information age, new requests are put forth for reading ability in new computer network environment. Accordingly, the cultivation and application of reading strategies in the new CALL environment has become an issue that both teachers and students can hardly ignore. As non-English major graduates in the learning society, how to do effective reading among the information ocean is thus put on the agenda. It’s better to teach a man how to fish than to give him fish, and learning how to learn will be more important than learning what to know. “Sterfeld proposes cultivating learners to gain the method of optimizing language input” (as cited in Shao Yongzhen, 1999:14). Therefore, it’s especially important for non-English major graduates to master effective reading strategies based on the possession of certain specialized background knowledge and vocabulary. “In recent years, many reading materials have taken the cultivation of reading skills as the essential target, which seems to be a general trend in the field of foreign language reading teaching” (Shu Dingfang Zhuang Zhixiang, 1996:137).Research on second language (L2) reading strategies is based on some theories, including psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, SLA and so on.
