哈尔滨工业大学工学硕士学位论文 哈尔滨工业大学工学硕士学位论文 -II- -II- Abstract MCU (Micro Controller Unit) plays an important role in digital IC design since it was invented in the late 1970s. It has been used in a variety of applications: industrial control, instrumentation, consumer electronics, SoC (System on Chip) and so on. Unfortunately, because of its lower than 20MIPS processing capability, traditional 8-bit MCUs application is largely constrained in many situations. This research comes from a true industrial project, A Mixed Analog-Digital Signal SoC Chip. In this project, an MCU is targeted, which has a instruction set compatable with that of MCS-51 family, and can be developped with common toolkit like Keil C51. In Chapter 2, the architecture of the MCS-51 MCU and its the instruction set are analysized. A new 5-stage pipeline structure is proposed, and its efficiency is scaled in clock cycles. In the newly designed MCU, a multiplication operation can be finished in 4 clock cycles. Three input carry-save adders are used in the multipler. In Chapter 3, the standard 8051 MCU power management module is improved. The original IDLE and STOP mode are still kept, and a new SUSPEND mode is added. The proposed clock source free-switching capability can reduce more power consumption further. In addition, the memory system is designed, and an flash IP (in TSMC 0.18um process) is used as the code memory. Orignally, this IP can run up to 30MHz only. After our redesigning the Flash driving module and associated control logic, the read/write timing is improved, the Flash IP can run at 50MHz. In Chapter 4, performence of the imporved MCU is analysized. The MCU is simulated on a platform, where handshaking protocol and OVM library are used . Finally the MCU is tested physically on Xilinx Virtex-2 Pro XC2VP30 board. The testing result indicats the MCU consumes 41% LUTs, and can run up to 60MHz.
