AbstractThenormalizationoftranslationalEnglishpublicsignsinChinahasmadegreatprogress,yetgreatdisparitybetweentranslationalandoriginalEnglishpublicsignsstillexists.Currentstudiesontranslationofpublicsignsmainlyfocusonthesummarizationofexamplesandenumerationoferrors,lackingpersuasivedatasupportandthoroughresearch.BasedonFunctionalistTranslationTheory,thisthesishasintroducedthecorpusresearchmethodandcombinedqualitativeandquantitativeanalysisintothestudyofC-Etranslationofpublicsigns.Withthehelpofself-establishedcomparablecorpus,thisthesishasanalyzedtranslationalandoriginalEnglishpublicsignsonlexical(wordvariability,wordlength,keywords,partofspeech)andsyntactic(averagesentencelength,passivevoiceandimperativesentence)level.Herearethefindingsthroughcomparison.Onlinguisticlevel,translationalEnglishpublicsignsareredundant,vagueanddynamicwithahighdegreeofparataxis,whileoriginalEnglishpublicsignsareconcise,preciseandstaticwithahighdegreeofhypotaxis.Onculturallevel,translationalEnglishpublicsignsprefersubjectiveconsciousnessandcollectivism,whileEnglishpublicsignspreferobjectiveconsciousnessandindividualism.TranslationalEnglishpublicsignsemphasizeApprobationMaxim,ModestyMaximandPositiveFace,whileoriginalEnglishpublicsignsemphasizeTactMaximandNegativeFace.Tonarrowthegap,translationofpublicsignsshouldfollowthetarget-receiverorientedprinciple,adoptdifferenttranslationstrategiesbasedontexttypology,andgiveprioritytothemethodsofborrowing,supplementedbyaddition,omissionandnegation.Keywords:publicsigns;corpus;FunctionalistTranslationTheoryContents哈尔滨工业大学硕士学位论文原创性声明111哈尔滨工业大学硕士学位论文使用授权书111Chapter1IntroductionTheterm“publicsign”isdefinedinthisresearchasinformationshowedtocertainaudiencesinpublicplaces,withspecialcommunicativefunctions,suchasprovidingguidance,expressingfeelingsandrestrictingothers’behaviors(LuoXuanmin,2006).Closelyconnectedwithbasicnecessitiesofhumanlife—food,clothing,shelterandtravelling,publicsignscouldbefoundinplaceslikestations,airports,schools,hospitals,offices,superm
