AcknowledgementsIwouldliketoexpressmysincereappreciationtoallwhohavehelpedandencouragedmetofinishwritingthethesis.ProfessorZhouQiqiang,mysupervisor,istheoneIfeelmostgratefulto.Hehasalwaysbeenpatientwithmyquestionsandproblems,andhasbeenprovidingmewithenlighteningsuggestionsonalltheproblems.Heisasharpmindedscholarandarespectablementoraswell.ProfessorXuLijieandChenYideandotherteachersintheSchoolofForeignStudiesofHunanUniversityofScienceandTechnologyalsogivemesomesignificanthelpduringthethree-yearstudy.Ialsowouldliketoexpressmyappreciationtomyparentswhotakecareofmylittlechildresponsibly.Withtheirhelp,Icanfullyengageinmystudy.AbstractAsanimportantandpervasivegrammaticalphenomenoninEnglish,thecountabilityofnounshasbeenpaidmuchattentionbylinguists,philosophersandpsychologists,andthefieldswhichitinvolvesbecomebroaderandbroader.Englishnounsconsistofpropernounsandcommonnouns,andcommonnounsaremadeupofcountnounsandmassnouns.Therearealotofresearchesinvolvingthediscriminationofcount-massnounswhichhavebeendone.Anditcanbejudgedanddefinedbyvariousmethodswhicharenotunifieduptonow.ThecountabilityofEnglishnounsisrelatedtotwocategories:oneisthecountnouncategory,andtheotherismassnouncategory.Wehavefoundthatthetwocategoriesareprototypicalcategorieswhichhavetheirprototypicalmembersandperipheralmembers.Prototypetheoryconsidersthattheboundaryofacategoryisuncertainandfuzzy,andtheboundaryhasthecharacteristicsofopenness.Becausetheobjectiveworldbearstheattributesofunlimitedness,continuityandendlessness,andmostofthethingsareakindofcontinuum,soitisimpossibletomakeacleardividinglinebetweencountnounsandmassnouns.Afterhavingdonealotofresearch,thecountabilityofnounsiscloselylinkedtohumans‘cognition,anditisthefruitoftheinteractionofhumansandtheobjectiveworld,itsconstrualisdynamic.Ithassomegeneralcharacteristics,butalsohassomepersonalities,i.e.theuncertainty.Wehavedonealotofresearchondistinctionofcount-massnouns.However,therearefewdiscussionsaboutthemechanismunderlyingcountability.Thisthesisholdsthatpro
