ASTUDYOFCREDITABLEENGLISHTRANSLATIONOFREDSORGHUM——FROMTHEPERSPECTIVEOFRECEPTIONAESTHETICSABSTRACTThethesisexploresreasonsforHowardGoldblatt’screditableEnglishtranslationofRedSorghum’ssuccessfromtheperspectiveofReceptionAesthetics.NobelPrizeinLiterature2012wasrewardedtoChinesewriterMoYan,whichindicatesthatWesternreadershaveacceptedhisworks.Readers’role,whichisindispensable,hasbeenlongignoredintheappreciationofliteraryworks.TranslationisthemostcommonwayforChineseworkstoreachWesternreadersandthesetargetreadersareavitalfactorthatinfluencestranslators.ReceptionAestheticsattachesgreatimportancetothefunctionofreadersandanalyzesthereceptioncourseandeffectsofliteraryworks.WhileworksofMoYanpossessuniquestyleandqualitieswhichcausetheircomplexity,theyhavereceivedconsiderableacceptanceformWesternreadership.Therefore,thestudyfocusesontheEnglishversionofRedSorghumtranslatedbyHowardGoldblattfromtheperspectiveofReceptionAestheticsinordertosummarizeeffectivemeasuresandstrategiesthatHowardGoldblattadopted.AftercomparingandcontrastingEnglishandChineseversionsofRedSorghum,theauthorofthethesissummarizesanddeducesdistinctivefeaturesoftheEnglishversionandthestrategiesthatHowardGoldblattuses.Inhistranslation,HowardGoldblattfollowshisbeliefin“translator’sprimaryobligationistothereaders”andconsidersreaders’horizonofexpectations.Byconvertingandexplainingunfamiliarobjectsandconcepts,deletingandrewritingcertaindifficultandunacceptablepartsandresolvinginconsistency,hehasmettheexpectationsfromtargetreaders.Healsomodifiessomespotsofindeterminacyandblanksinthenovelbyrearrangingorsupplementingsomeplotsandsegmentingsomeparagraphs.TheseadaptationsincreaseIRedSorghum’sfamiliarityandreadabilitytotargetreaders.Moreover,HowardGoldblattmaintainssomedistancebetweenRedSorghumandtargetreaders.Hisavoidanceofannotationsandliteraltranslationofmanyculture-loadedtermsandnamesofaddressinghavechallengedtargetreadersandintroducedexoticfeaturesintothehorizonofexpectationsfromWesternreaders.Histranslationofthenamesofman
