AbstractInthemiddleof1970s,ChinareopeneditsdoortotheWestandrestartedto communicatewiththerestoftheworldaftertheCulturalRevolution.TheChinese paintings,withoutexception,appearedagainonthestageofinternationalpainting fieldthroughbooksandperiodicals,exhibitionsandgovernmentalor nongovernmentalartexchanges.Amongmanyhigh-profileChineseartists,Wu Guanzhonghasbecomeoneofthebest paintersbyhisuniquepaintingsandart qualities.Nomatterwhethertheyareinkpaintingsoroilpaintings,Wu’sworkshave becomeamodelwhichunitstheEastandWestandfusestraditionandmodernity.As oneofthemostsignificantartistsinthehistoryofChineseart,hewasalsorecognizedasoneofrepresentatives ofthemodernChinesepaintingsin20thcentury.Wu’sartisticviewsandpaintingpracticestructurallyshockedChineseart. Throughouthisanthologyandpaintingcollections,wecanfeelthathisworksarenot limitedtotraditionortobeconservative,ornotseekingforillusoryandfantastic post-modernisticartwhichisdivorcedfromlifeandrealityneither,butstressboth formalandabstractbeautyofdrawingsandenableformalitysubordinateditselftothe innerheart.Inthis way,thesignificancecanbefoundinconcreteness andabstractness andtheinterestsinwrittenformandexpressedemotion.Developingfromconcreteto semi-abstractandthentoabstractart,WuGuanzhong’spaintingsstylenotonly remainonthestageofabstractnessbutintheback-and-forthrotationofconcreteness andabstractness.Itdemonstratesahighlevelfusionofthesetwoexpressive characteristicsinhispaintingworks.Forexampleinpaintingfigurativeart,hedidnot simplypaintsceneryandaccuratelyreflecttheobjectivesbutwasoftenhauntedby artisticconceptionandreorganizedtherefinedobjectivesafterbreakingthelimitof shapes andcolors intheminterms ofthe rules offormalbeauty;inchoosingmaterials, forinstance,heusuallyredrewthepictureshehaddrawnbeforebydifferentpainting materials.Whenhechangedthestyleofthosepictures,hedidnot incompletely replaceoldviewsbynewstyle,butmadeupandexaggeratethemtoemphasizethe senseofhisheartbyextractingoldelements ,inordertoseizetheaudience’s soula
