Proper Use of Antibiotics in Food Animal Production Erin Conrad Why is this issue important to you? Why are antibiotics allowed in food animals? How resistance occurs Who is involved? How can we prevent or slow antibiotic resistance? What is being done about antibiotic resistance? What can producers do? What can we do? Why should we do this? (Giving examples from beef producer standpoint but the main points are relevant to swine, sheep, poultry, and dairy) We hear a lot about antibiotic resistance linked to food animal production This is not just an agricultural problem It is everyone’s responsibility to help fix this problem (food animal producers, agricultural and health agencies, health officials and veterinarians, pharmaceutical companies, and consumers) Why is this issue important to you? Many of us will be working in the food animal industry Antibiotic resistance can pass from animals to humans (CDC 2006) Antibiotic resistance is increasing in human and veterinary medicine With each decade antibiotic resistance becomes more wide spread According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) almost all significant bacterial infections in the world are becoming resistant to the antibiotic treatment of choice Antibiotics vs. Antimicrobials Both kill or inhibit bacteria Antibiotics are made from living organisms like fungi Antimicrobials are a broader class including antibiotics and synthetic products Uses Treat illness Improve performance Antibiotics cannot be used to treat viruses Why are antibiotics allowed in food animals? Critical tool for treating sick animals and controlling disease Allow producers to produce meat, milk, and eggs more efficiently How resistance occurs Antibiotics do not technically cause resistance—they promote the development of resistance Antibiotic resistance results from gene action Antibiotics allow bacteria with a genetic variation to flourish When an animal/human is given an antibiotic, the defenseless bac
