i In the nineties of the last century, first large scale wind farms were erected in the USA.
f
i Typically, the turbines used had a power rating of 250kW and a rotor diameter of 35m with a
c
e rated speed of 50-60RpM on the rotor. Due to a lack of experience with the gearbox design
p specifically for wind turbines, damages often were of classical nature (pitting, tooth breakage)
s
or bearing failures. Micropitting (or grey-staining) was not an issue at that time due to the
f
o high rotational speeds of the gears.

o In the beginning of the twenty-first century, the standard AGMA 6006 was introduced as the
i first comprehensive standard covering gear rating specifically for wind turbines. Together
t
a with the design guidelines of the GL and DNV, a set of design and analysis rules were
l
u available to the gearbox designer.

a In the meantime, the nominal power of the wind turbines in use rose to 750kW to 1.5MW and
C the rotor speed dropped to 25RpM. Classical gear failures were observed less and less as more
experience and design guidelines were available. Bearing failures were still an issue though.
