PDP Price Trends: 42” ED and HD Prices Fall 4%
As indicated in the following figure, average prices in all three PDP categories continued the five-month trend of
dropping prices with both 42” ED and HD falling 4%, a greater drop than occurred in June. The average low price for
42” HD fell from $3351 to $3254, and ED models dropped from $1974 to $1896. Meanwhile, 50” showed a slightly
smaller reduction at 3% from $4914 to $4786, flattening slightly after deeper drops in June. The price gap between 42”
HD and ED narrowed again this month to $1358 from June’s $1377. We anticipate further narrowing as new models
are transitioned in. The 50”/42” HD price gap narrowed from $1563 from $1532 as the month produced more
aggressive pricing on 50” models with Best Buy and Circuit City occasionally going head-to-head on a SKU.
