Existing collections, including the subjects or themes for collecting The existing collections consist principally of the 1869 composite clipper ship Cutty Sark and artefacts relating to the ship and her history, designers, builders, owners, crews, cargoes, the clipper ship genre, the Merchant Navy and Robert Burns. Of particular note are the collection of journals, logs, drawings, paintings, photographs and published material relating to the construction, working life and restoration of Cutty Sark. In addition, the Trust holds the Long John Silver collection of Merchant Navy figureheads, the largest extant collection of this type in the world. 2. Criteria governing future collecting policy, including the subjects or themes for collecting The subjects and themes for collecting include material relevant to the Cutty Sark (including her name and its association with Robert Burns) her builders, owners, crews and cargoes (with particular reference to the tea trade), as well as any artefact relating to other vessels, people and places that can be linked to the clipper ship genre. 3. Period of time and/or geographical area to which collecting relates Collecting is governed by association with Cutty Sark and the clipper ship genre, rather than by geographical area. The principal time period to which the collection relates will be 1869-1957, when the Cutty Sark was either in active service, used as a cadet training vessel or undergoing restoration in Greenwich. Moreover, objects relating to the clipper ship genre, roughly a time period of the mid to late nineteenth century, and modern day models, paintings, photographs and other artefacts depicting Cutty Sark will also be collected. 4.
