Segments of Spinal Cord ? as a rule: cervical cord segments lie almost 1 spine higher than their corresponding vertebrae, thoracic segments lie almost 2 spines higher and lumbar segments 3-4 spines higher than their corresponding vertebrae = LV1 sacral and coccygeal segments = TV10 ~ TV12 lumber segments -3 = TV6 ~ TV9 lower thoracic region (T9~T12) -2 = TV3 ~ TV6 middle thoracic region (T5~T8) -1 = CV4 ~ TV3 lower cervical and upper thoracic region (C5~T4) = CV1 ~ CV4 upper cervical region (C1~C4) vertebral levels (spines) spinal segments The Dermatomes ? A dermatome is an area of skin supplied by the dorsal (sensory) root of a spinal nerve. Each segment is horizontally disposed. ? Note that there is considerable overlapping of adjacent dermatomes. Each segmental nerve overlaps a part of area of its neighbors. Blood Supply of the Spinal Cord ? vertebral artery ? ascending cervical artery ? intercostal artery ? lumbar artery ? anterior spinal artery ? posterior spinal arteries ? anastomotic loops ? segmental medullary artery ? radicullary artery Segmental Spinal Artery Major Anterior Medullary Artery (Artery of Adamkiewicz) Arterial Supply of the Spinal Cord ? sulcal (central) branches ? pial plexus Venous Drainage of the Spinal Cord ? follows a basically similar pattern to arteries supply ? six longitudinal interconnecting venous channels - anterior posterior spinal veins - anterolateral posterolateral veins ? anterior posterior radicular veins drain into internal vertebral venous plexus in epidural space Radicular Veins ? internal venous plexus → external venous plexus → ascending lumbar veins, azygos vein and hemiazygos vein Vertebral Canal Its Contents * Fetus has one continous anterior concavity After birth, when raise your head, the cervical part of the column becomes concave anteriorly; while you begin to stand upright, the lumbar part becomes concave anteriorly. * Fetus has one continous anterior concavity After birth, when raise
