Connecting the Dots: GPS: The student will explain the impact of European exploration and colonization on the world. Assumption: Let us assume that the world is a circle graph (a pie chart). How much of an impact do you think Europe had on the entire world? If you agree that European exploration impacted the whole world, let us visualize this impact as a percent. Indicate the impact/influence of each European colonial power in the graph below. Use color to separate each colonial power’s percentage. The choices are: Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, Dutch, and Belgium. The countries colonized by Great Britain include Canada, Australia, and the United States.? But they also include several African countries, a good portion of the Middle East, South Vietnam.? So there is a mixed bag of how well the former colonies have done since their independence.? However, the greatest colonial success stories do belong to Great Britain, with France deserving a mention for their contributions to Quebec and Louisiana. Colonialism in this sense refers to Western European countries colonization of lands mainly in the Americas, Oceania and Africa; however it also covers their taking control over lands already inhabited by native populations. The main European countries that were successful in this Colonial Era were France, Spain, The United Kingdom, Netherlands and Portugal. Each one of these countries had a period of almost complete power in the world trade from roughly 1500 to 1800. British colonies Open up page 495 of your textbook. The imperialist English man (symbolizing European countries) straddling the African continent says he owns all of it, all of it! French colonies This map is not correct, really, because after the French-Indian War, France gave up most of its Canadian possessions to Great Britain except Quebec and part of Ontario. The rest if the world appears correct. German colonies Italian colonies Portuguese colonies Spanish colonies Almo
