HACIENDA LA PUENTE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Superintendent’s Report Proposed Changes to Graduation Requirements: Classes of 2005, 2006 and 2008 June 7, 2004 Board of Education’s Goals Goal 1: All students in the HLPUSD will succeed in …..achieving at high academic standards. Goal 6: The District will develop and sustain programs of excellence….which result in high levels of success for students. Most Recent Change to Grad Requirements Adopted in summer, 2001. Change was for the Class of 2004. Added a 3rd year to the math requirement Focused 20 credits of electives into a career path or advanced academic coursework Changes Are Required Periodically To remain in alignment with changes in Ed. Code or state testing requirements To align with federal legislation To provide rigorous and relevant coursework in academic and career prep areas so students will be competitive in a changing economy Proposed Change to Science Requirement for class of 2008 Require 3 years of science instead of 2 Require that at least 1 of the 3 years be a college prep lab science Apply the science change (and others proposed) to the Class of 2008, students who will enter high school this fall Proposed change for Science Requirement for class of 2005-2006 For the 2005 and 2006 graduating classes, a third year of science is strongly recommended. Rationale for Proposed Science Changes (2008) Currently the high schools’ APIs are reduced because students are required to take only 2 years of science Not all students experience high academic standards in science Fewer students take college prep courses in science than in any other core academic area Students in Non-College Prep Courses (Fall, 2004) Conclusions from Data At least 1200 of the students in non-college prep science are successful in college prep levels of math, 1800 more in English, all in social science The district should begin to transition students to college prep science as it did in social science 10-12 years ago.
