TEMPLATE 2010 The Occasional Newsletter from the BZA The present BZA Committee Comprise: David Law (Chair), Martin Attfield (Treasurer), Craig Williams (Secretary), Paul Wright (Immediate Past Chair), Robert Raja (BZA 2010 Organiser), Vladimir Zholobenko, Mike Anderson, Joe Hriljac, Gary Hix, Duncan Macquarrie, Robert Hodgkins, Luke O’Brien and Aidan Doyle. Chairs Welcome Hello BZA members - and welcome to the 2010 edition of ‘Template’. My name is Dave Law, and in August 2009 I took over as Chairman of the BZA from Paul Wright. ‘Template’ was the annual newsletter of the BZA and the more observant amongst you will have noticed that this is the first time we have published our ‘annual’ newsletter since 2004 so this is our ‘re-launch’. Previous editions of ‘Template’ were colourful with various interesting articles but our aim with this edition is rather more modest and we want to let the BZA membership, and all those who attend our conferences, know about the committee of dedicated volunteers who are behind the BZA, who they are and what they do. Currently, I am a senior chemist with BP and my main area of work is heterogeneous catalysis. This is mainly zeolites and more specifically, understanding how these catalysts work. My work involves a lot of characterisation, catalyst testing and even modelling (for those parts even characterisation can’t reach!) I have worked for BP for 12 years and have worked within this field for the last seven years. I joined the BZA in 2006, at the time I was fairly new to the field of zeolite chemistry as my background was in organometallics and homogeneous catalysis. My predecessor at BP, in the zeolite field, had been very active within the BZA and a previous president of the association (Warren Smith, for those that know him). I was invited to join the BZA committee as an industrial member by Michael Stockenhuber (ex BZA Secretary). I would like to take this opportunity for me to share my thoughts on the BZA.
