* * * Just a couple more themes here… Stanley Wilder, 1990; Darla Rushing Deborah Poole, 2002 Louisiana State University Loyola University, New Orleans Relationship between employment in the library and student completion -- significant! 4 year completion rate for library students = 60%; 4 year completion for others = less than 30 % (small sample though) Wilder = natural advantages of study environment; positive influences; natural exposure to materials; demystifies the library * So far we’ve looked at library services and programs; library facilities… often grouped with other campus facilities (e.g. gym, residence halls, etc) Brent Mallinckrodt 1987 , University of Iowa Looked at use of library facilities by race; found the library was the ONLY facility that significantly impacted the retention of Black students Linda K. Lau, 2003 Longwood University (Farmville, VA) Library mentioned as “campus facilities” with slight impact on retention * Before we go any further: challenges to student retention research. Retention click Attrition click Persitence click Completion click Graduation rates click Frequently confused terms! When you’re comparing retention information, make sure you’re comparing like measures Different time periods covered ? e.g. my very first statistic: attrition at U of L 28% v.s. national rate of 40% -- U of L was based on 7 years to completion; national based on 5 or 6 years to completion (based on what info was available) – clearly, if you give students more time, more will finish! So be careful with time periods… Also, various institution types (w/ diff student populations, norms, goals) and sometimes different students are included/excluded from the retention #s reported (e.g. might omit transfer students; might include or exclude students who failed our or were forced to leave by the institution) * * In the 2005 book “College Student Retention” edited by Alan Seidman, Linda Hagedorn has a great chapter that explains the
