Handling Problem Participants
There are five main types of problem participants. Even though you might not have someone in each of the categories, you are encouraged to study all five since you may gain some cross-over ideas from each.
The Talker
The Belligerent
The Sleeper
The Interrupter
The Wanderer/Sideliner
The Talker
The talker likes to hear his own voice and will speak up for no discernible reason on just about any and every topic. His activity wastes time for everyone and drags the meeting length out past where most people like it.
The only reasonable way to handle the talker is to politely make sure that everyone in the meeting knows that its okay to speak up about an issue, but that each person should remember that no one likes an unnecessarily long meeting. Also enlist the aid of everyone in the meeting to politely help others keep the meeting on track.
The Belligerent
He just doesnt agree with you and his method of explaining his viewpoint is to yell, scream, and/or throw a hissy fit. This puts everyone in the room on the defensive as they wonder when hell strike next. Face it, operating a chapter can be an emotional, highly charged thing for everyone. Opinions differ and thats just something that people have to deal with. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes that this is the case and are not willing to listen to and possibly compromise with others.
There are two methods for dealing with the belligerent. The first is to give him a little of his own medicine by letting him be a meeting leader. Hell be given what he gives very quickly and hopefully that will open his eyes to his own behavior and how hurtful and dangerous it can be. The second way to deal with him is, of course, to discuss his poor behavior with him politely, but firmly. Tell him that you wont accept such behavior and that youll have the sergeant-at-arms remove him from the meeting if
