Compared with traditional wireless LAN and Ad hoc networks, the sensor nodes energy and processing capability are very limited in wireless sensor networks, so the traditional routing protocol is not suitable for applying in wireless sensor networks. According to the specific application environment and requirements, the routing protocol for WSNs should be changed. Nowadays, the design and research on routing protocols has become a hot issue in many fields. LEACH Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy, LEACH) is a kind of classical levels routing protocol based on clusters. As the first level routing Protocols, initial design of LEACH is detail and intact, there are many levels routing Protocols are the improvement and optimization of LEACH. Therefore, LEACH has high value in the research of wireless sensor networks. Firstly this paper describes the general development of WSNs, studies the basic knowledge of the typical clustering routing protocols, especially the LEACH protocol. Then proposes an advanced network model-Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks (HWSNs) model, and a stable Election Protocol (SEP) used in HWSNs. Finally, using MATLAB as an experimental platform, simulates the improved algorithm SEP and LEACH in different aspects separately, analyzes and compares each performance. The experimental results show that, SEP put forward in this paper can balance the network energy better, improve the energy utilization ratio of nodes, and prolong the entire network lifetime.
