Acknowledgement Through the process of writing this paper, I got a lot of help from others. Here I want to express my sincere thanks to them. I would like first to give my deepest gratitude to my dear teacher, Ms. Wang Xiuli, who generously gave me her constant encouragement and instructions. She has helped me through all the stages of the writing of this thesis. Without her consistent and illuminating instruction, this thesis would not have reached its present form. Then I would like to thank all my friends at school. We spent 4 years together. When I was in trouble, I can always get help from them .My college life has been very colorful. Most important of all, I want to give my thanks to my mother university and all the teachers in the English Department, who have educated, cultivated, instructed and helped me a lot in the past two years. Last my thanks would go to my beloved family for their loving consider actions and great confidence in me all through these years.  Abstract Most critics believe that Henry in the novel A farewell to Arms is the representative of “lost generation”, and Catherine is as a vulnerable “stuffed doll”. However, this paper believes that Henry and Catherine both have the characteristics of the “code heroes”. They both experience the difficulties, but they do not give up the courage to struggle. Although their ends are not good, they still display the undefeated spirit. But as the prototypes of “code heroes”, they inevitably have limitations. Their experiences reflect Hemingway’s pondering of the significance of life and correct attitude towards life in his early age.
