The Terrorist and His Media (a rereading of the Sorcerer and His Magic) Gustavo Steinberg Abstract: Applying Dayan and Katzs concept of media events to the terrorist attacks of September 11, this essay opposes functionalist and structuralist explanations of how society relates to the mass media. It shows that it is possible to think that mass media today play the role that the shaman - as conceived by structuralism - plays in traditional societies: the one of reinforcing (or creating) the very idea of society. It goes on to discuss the desirability of such a position and the possibility of escaping from the centralism of thebig media, as opposed to the decentralised small media. Key words: Media Events – Structuralism – Functionalism – magic – shaman – mass media – myth – ritual The Terrorist and His Media (a rereading of the Sorcerer and His Magic) How applicable is Dayan and Katz’s notorious theory of media events (1992) to present-day media? The applicability of a theory is a tricky question. How applicable is Newton’s theory of classical physics in the world where relativity and quantum physics have proven to be ‘truer’? Classical physics is of course applicable nowadays and indeed widely used, because it corresponds to a more practical approximation in an environment of small velocities. Heavily inspired by a quest for scientificity in the realm of social sciences, functionalism tries to give simple explanations to very complex social phenomena, searching somehow to replicate the beauty of the very concise explanations that physics gives to the universe. Dayan and Katz’s (1992b) theory of media events follows this functionalist tradition and has to be understood in such a context.
