May, 2009 21st Century Learning Outcomes What do they look like? Introduction: Learning outcomes have been a part of our lesson planning procedures for years. The purpose of a learning outcome is to provide a description of what will be accomplished or achieved by the student. Overarching Questions How should outcomes be designed for 21st century learners ? Should they be different? If so why or why not? Review the following examples as we address these questions and build upon our knowledge. Example 1 – Learning Outcome To review the causes of the Civil War. Analysis of Learning Outcome 1 What do you think about the learning outcome in Example 1? (To review the causes of the Civil War.) Is there anything missing? Can this outcome be improved? Example 2 – Learning Outcome The students will be able to list the causes of the Civil War. Analysis of Learning Outcome 2 Improvement Points: The outcome in Example 2 indicates who is being addressed. The students will… The outcome states that the students will list something. This is better than the students will review. Review is a procedure. Can the outcome be further improved? Is there anything else missing? Example 3 – Learning Outcome The students will be able to list the causes of the Civil War at an 80% degree of accuracy. Analysis of Learning Outcome 3 Improvement Points: A level of achievement has been identified in Example 3. What else can be included in order to further improve the outcome? Example 4 – Learning Outcome After reading a chapter from the textbook and viewing a video from Teacher Tube on the causes of the Civil War; the students will be able to list the causes of the Civil War at an 80% degree of accuracy in the context of a power point presentation. Analysis of Learning Outcome 4 Improvement Points: The context for learning is described in Outcome 4. For example, it is stated where the students will obtain the information. The outcome also indicates how the student
