EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Learning is an emotional activity We learn well when we are: Curious Emotionally engaged Involved Can deal with uncertainty change We stop learning when we are: Anxious Alienated Otherwise distressed detached EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Emotionally intelligent people are: Aware of their own emotions Appreciate others’ thoughts, feelings and experiences As a result they learn successfully with and from others to: Take in facts Appreciate perspectives perceptions Transfer learning to different contexts EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE When we have insufficient opportunities to explore feelings we start to disconnect two areas of the brain: The emotional The intellectual As a result we may be less able to: Assess situations Form judgements Make positive decisions Experience personal satisfaction Form positive relationships EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Emotional Intelligence is fostered when people are secure enough within themselves to hold on to their capacity to think. Opportunities for emotional intelligence to flourish occur through such approaches strategies activities as: Philosophy for Children Drama Class School Councils committees Pupil self-assessment target setting Peer mentoring Nurture Group/nurture work A central focus on enquiry pupil involvement in their learning
