INTRODUCTION The success of any systemic educational reform depends on three parties: the public authority (state government) for well informed policy-making, the local community (including teachers, parents) for participation and innovation, and the international community for technical assistance. The large-scale and profound reforms in China, educational as well as economic, social, political and cultural, in recent decades have been closely interwined with international forces through open-door policy. No one could hope to have an in-depth understanding of the changes without an examination of international education. The three-fold purpose of this presentation: 1) to critically review emerging trends in international education in the changing development context; 2) to critically examine impacts of globalization on international education; and 3) to identify areas of research gap and propose strategy for development-oriented joint research efforts in international education I.
