Additional functions and their corresponding equipment in today’s cars create a bewildering tangle of cables and confusing functional connections. As a result， it has become more and more difficult to diagnose faults in such systems and to resolve them within a reasonable period. The secret of effective diagnosis and troubleshooting is to have a logical， wellordered procedure. Following a logical ; stepbystep procedure will get you to the root cause of a problem quickly and efficiently. Repair manuals will have a diagnostic tree that goes in a logical progression. It will ask a question， usually yes or no， and depending on the answer will branch off in two or more directions. The last box in the tree will have the problem and how to correct it. A more complicated procedure will have branches going into specific tests and then have two or more branches from there depending on test results.; Usually， the information of the faults appearing in an automobile comes from a number of sources: customer comments， visual inspection， manufacturer’s diagnosis manuals. The first place to go for the fault information is to a person who has firsthand knowledge of problem: the customer. You must actually listen to what the customer says. The report may be garbled and confusing， and perhaps contradictory， but it often holds the key to the problem. Ideally， after listening to the customer’s initial comments， you will think for a ; moment， come up with a preliminary diagnosis， then ask some pertinent questions to help confirm or reject your ideas. Then next informationgathering activity is the visual inspection. It only makes sense to eliminate obvious sources of difficulty before getting into more complex testing and diagnosis. As befor
