培养学生阅读策略

Making inferences To make an inference, you read a text, sentence, or phrase, think about it, and understand things about the text are not mentioned. For example, after reading, “Suzy is relaxing on her sofa.” you can infer: Suzy is a woman; Suzy is a woman’s name and the writer uses “her” to refer to Suzy. Suzy is probably at home; we usually find sofas in homes and we know that it is Suzy’s sofa. Suzy is probably lying down on her sofa; many people lie down when relaxing on their sofa. The writer doesn’t tell us that Suzy is a woman who is lying on her sofa at home, but we can make these inferences from the information in the text. When you read effectively, you make inferences to help you understand the text and the author better. Making judgements When you judge something, you decide if it is good or bad, right or wrong, interesting or boring, fair or unfair, strange or normal, etc. For example: “When I was sixteen, I wanted to date a girl in my class because she had beautiful eyes and a sweet voice. I didn’t know anything else about her, but I thought I was in love with her.” Do you think the writer’s reasons for falling in love with th girl were good reasons or bad reasons? Do you think his feelings are normal or unsusual for a 16-year-old? Do you think he will be successful in finding love? If it is not important how you answer these questions, but it is important that you judge what you read. You can base your judgments on your own knowledge, your personal experience, as well as your opinions and reasoning. At school or college you need to make judgments all the time, whenever you write an essay, hold a discussion, or attend a lecture.
