ChapterⅠIntroductionSignificanceoftheResearchThevaguenessistheessenceoflanguageanditcannotbeavoidedinlinguistics.Inrecentyears,greatsuccesshasbeenmadeinthestudyofvaguelinguistics.Itcanbeseenthatlanguageisregardedasasocialbehaviorratherthananindependentsystem.Underthiscircumstance,thestudyoflanguagevaguenessisincreasinglytransferredfromtheangleofsemanticstomulti-angle,whichattachesmoreimportancetopragmatics.Althoughmanyresearchesintovaguenesshaveemerged,theyarelimitedtovaguewords,hedges,vaguesemantics,vaguerhetoricorvaguetext.Therefore,inordertoachievemoreeffectivecommunication,thepresentdissertationwillpaymoreattentiontopragmaticvaguenessindiplomaticlanguage.BasedonRelevanceTheory,thedissertationanalyzespragmaticvaguenessindiplomaticlanguagefromtheangleofcognitivecontext,whichisadevotedattempt.Ithastheoreticalandpracticalsignificance.Theoretically,usingtheoriesofcognitivepragmaticstoelaboratepragmaticvaguenessindiplomaticlanguagecanenlargetheexplanatorypowerofRelevanceTheoryandothertheoriesinpragmatics.Practically,diplomaticactivitieshaveincreasinglyoccurredamongdifferentcountriesintheworld.Inordertomaintaintheirpositions,sometimesdiplomatscannotavoidsharpdisputes.However,asimagesoftheircountries,diplomatsaresupposedtoremarkandbehaveinadecentmanner.Consequently,theyusuallyusevagueness.Politiciansanddiplomatsusevaguestrategiesnotonlytorealizetheirpoliticalpurpose,butalsotoconcealtheirrealintention.Thus,audiencesfailtogetacorrectjudgment.Thestudyisinstructivefornormalpeopletograspdiplomats’implications.Meanwhile,itishelpfulfordiplomatstouseroundaboutexpressions,thusavoidingtouchytopicsorembarrassmentsandleavingroomfornegotiation.PurposeoftheResearchThefactthatpeoplecommonlyusevaguenessbutseldomrealizeitsimportanceurgestheauthortodothisresearch,whichmayhelppeoplebeawareofthislanguagephenomenon.Itsobjectivesareasfollows.Firstly,thedissertationaimsatstrengtheningtheconsciousnessofpeople’spragmaticvagueness.Peoplealwaysusevaguelanguageintheirdailylifeunconsciously,butthey
