1.Once upon a time,there was a large,lovely garden.
once upon a time意为“从前,很久以前”,也可以说:long ago/long,long ago或者a long time ago等,这是讲故事常用的开头语。
2.Its trees were filled with singing birds.
句中be filled with意为“充满”,其中的filled是动词fill的过去分词,起形容词作用,用在系动词be后作表语,此结构在意义上与be full of同义。;3.How happy they were!
本句为感叹句,其构成为:How+形容词/副词+主语+谓语!
4.“What are you doing here?”the giant cried in a loud voice.
in a loud voice意为“大声地”,与in a high voice同义,反义短语为in a low voice,意为“低声地”。
5.They ran away and dared not come back.
◆run away意为“逃跑,走掉,逃脱”。
◆dare在这里作情态动词,通常用于疑问句或否定句中。dare not意为“不敢”,后接动词原形。在肯定句中常用其实义动词的用法,后常接动词不定式。;6.The children were frightened.
frightened为形容词,意为“害怕的”,与afraid同义,常用来修饰人。
【拓展】 frightening也为形容词,意为“令人害怕的,吓人的,可怕的”,常用来修饰物。

用next表示时间、季节等的“下一个”时,如果是针对过去或将来而言,用the next;如果是针对现在而言,则用next。;8.The poor children no longer had a place to play.
no longer意为“不再”,常用来修饰延续性动词,位于be动词、情态动词或助动词之后,实义动词之前,其同义词组为not…any longer,它们主要用来表示时间上不再延续,多用于一般现在时,主要对现在的情况和过去的情况进行比较。
【拓展】 no more=not …any more也可表示“不再”,指做事的次数或事物在数量上不再增加,一般与非延续性动词连用。; 9.When spring came,flowers blossomed and the birds began to sing across the land.
across在本句中表示经过某一地方或区域,意为“越过”。
