It includes the planning, designing, construction, maintenance, and operation of the infrastructure, and it is essential to our society. In China , Civil Engineering is defined as a general discipline of science and technology to build all engineering construction and factories. And in English, ”civil” comes from civilization, which has a close relation to people. Civil Engineering is a form of human activity that has been pursued as long as human beings have sought to change the natural environment for their own benefit. The history of Civil Engineering can be divided into three periods. In ancient times, from 5,000-odd BC to the 1650s, there were many great projects and some of which even can be seen today, such as great pyramids, the Great Wall and so on . From the 1650s to the 1950s, Civil Engineering changed greatly, it was equipped with large quantities of theories and technologies at that time. It solves engineering problems with applied science and innovation and affects many of people’s daily activities. Since the 1950s, with the development of economy and society, civil engineering has been developing at an amazing rate. More advanced theories and technologies has been applied in this field. So nowadays, civil engineering is playing a more and more important role in the national economy and is close to peoples daily life. How to be a qualified civil engineer? To be an excellent civil engineer, of course, we should learn mathematics and science at first, for engineering is based on science and technology. Meanwhile, learning some basic knowledge of art, society and law is necessary us civil engineers, too. What’s more, in the 21st century，creation and innovation is more and more important for an engineer.
