华中科技 大学硕士 学 华 中 科 技 大 学 硕 士 学 位 论 文 I I Abstract With the development of pragmatics, more and more researchers have studied pragmatic effects of language in various aspects. And the studies on pragmatic effects of ambiguity have done in recent years by many scholars. However, most of them have focused on the lexical, syntactic or grammatical levels, or on the study styles. The research on pragmatic effects of phonological ambiguity is neglected. Phonological ambiguity, as a widely existed language phenomenon, is an important part of ambiguity studies in linguistics, and has been frequently occurred in our daily oral communication. Phonological ambiguity is closely related to the speaker’s intention. The study of phonological ambiguity actually is the study of illocutionary force. Two and a Half Men is a famous American situational comedy which is full of phonological ambiguities with no study in it has been taken. It tells the stories between two brothers Charlie and Alan and the son of Alan, Jake, and the people around them with American’s casual daily life as the background, which means there may be different kinds of phonological ambiguity taken place in it. This paper intends to take the scripts of Two and a Half Men as the study object. It attempts to discover the different types of phonological ambiguity and also discussed the pragmatic effects of phonological ambiguity based on the three subordinate acts of Austin’s Speech Act Theory. This article discovered three types of phonological ambiguity based on the collected 34 examples as the research data from Two and a Half Men. It analyzed the pragmatic effects of the three kinds of phonological ambiguity from locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary levels, the three subordinate acts of speech act theory respectively. The unity of the phonological ambiguity at different levels presents out. In the end, this paper summed up the four crucial types of pragmatic effects of phonological ambiguity in a sitcom. I
