Compared with his two outstanding novels, Nineteen Eighty-four and Animal Farm, most of his novels, have received relatively fewer reviews and their literary value has not been properly appreciated. Besides, the majority of the study on him and his works are carried out from political perspective, consequently neglecting their literariness. This thesis probes into the novel Coming Up for Air from a totally different point of view, namely body and self to arouse both readers’ and critics’ attention on Orwell’s technique to express the theme “self”. With the adoption of close reading, this thesis takes great pains to reveal the relationship between body and self in this novel. The phenomenon of body distortion can be easily detected in this novel, which presents the protagonist Bowling’s constant denial and ultimate loss of his self. Many relevant theories on body, such as the relationship between body and self, the definition of death and so on, will be employed to interpret the relationship between the distorted body and the lost self, this thesis points out that the two types of presentations of body distortion are to illustrate that the protagonist is undergoing the gradual loss of self.
