R. China Ladies and gentlemen, It is my pleasure to participate in this conference and exchange views with you. First, please allow me, on behalf of Qin Zhenkui, Director General of Import and Export Food Safety Bureau, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, and myself, to deliver congratulations to Workshop on Agro-food Safety, co-held by China Ministry of Agriculture, the World Bank, Netherlands Food Safety Capacity Building Program, organized by Food Industry Branch, China Council for the Promotion of the International Business (CCPIT). I here present my point of view in terms of the status quo and perspective on import and export food safety in China for your reference. Chinese government attaches much attention to food safety issues Food safety is one of concerns worldwide. Foodborne diseases, aroused by eating unsafe food, cause hundred millions of cases and millions of deaths. Food safety, therefore, has become ever significant in public health in the globe. The reform and opening-up has facilitated Chinese food industry than ever before which achieved a 10.4% increase in the last decade of the 20th century. In the 21st century, great changes, where one is from social development, the other from technology advance, have taken place in the external macro-environment and internal industry structure in Chinese food industry, which leads to the improvement of life quality, and introduction of some issues to be exploited and researched. The world issue of food safety is the one we have to face firstly. With the transfer of consuming manner to socialization, the influence of food safety incidents extends to society from individuals and families. With economy globalization, food safety issue
