PAGE PAGE 14 Chapter One Introduction 1.1 Introduction to the Author Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, a historic county of Northern England in 1816. She was the third of six children. Her father Patrick Bronte was an Irish Anglican clergyman and her mother was a housewife. Her mother’s death of cancer when she was only 5 years old was a big blow to her whole family. Her childhood was spent in misery, dreariness and poverty. The only comfort came from her father’s reading instruction. In August 1824, she was sent with three of her sisters, Emily, Maria, and Elizabeth, to the Clergy Daughters School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire, where her two elder sisters, Maria and Elizabeth died because of the hostile environment there. In 1831, she went to receive her education at Roe Head, Mirfield where she worked as a teacher several years later. From 1839 to 1841, she made a living by working as a governess to several families, a job which was discriminated and brought her great hardship and humiliation. During this time, two men proposed to her but was both refused. In 1854 at the age of 38 years old, she got married to her father’s young priest named Abe Nichols. The marriage brought her great joy, but only lasted 6 months. On the way back from a visit with her husband to see waterfall in a wasteland, she was caught by a rainstorm and got a serious cold. Since then, she had been confined to bed and never got recovered. Pitifully, on March 31st, 1855, she died with an unborn baby. During her lifetime, writing, a habit formed and kept from her childhood, was not merely a hobby to kill her free time, but a spiritual pillar which accompanied her to pass the difficult times of her life. Whenever she was free, she threw herself into writing.
