中 国 刺 秀Chinese Embroidery Chinese Embroidery History Style History Chinese embroidery has a long history since neolithic age（新石器时代）. Because of the quality of silk fiber, most Chinese fine embroideries are made in silk. Some ancient vestiges of silk production have been found in various neolithic sites dating back 5000 ~ 6000 years in China. A silk piece of fabric was found on a mummy in Egypt 3000 years old, which has been testified as old Sichuan Embroidery. Currently the earliest real sample of silk embroidery discovered in China is from a Tomb in Hubei province in Mashan identified with the zhanguo period (5th-3rd Centuries BC). Style Today, silk embroidery is practiced nearly all over China. The Four Famous Embroideries of China refer to the Xiang embroidery in central Chinas Hunan Province, Shu embroidery in western Chinas Sichuan Province, Yue embroidery in southern Chinas Guangdong Province and Su embroidery in eastern Chinas Jiangsu Province. Su Embroidery Producing area: around Suzhou, Jiangsu Province Characteristic : It is famous for its beautiful patterns, elegant colors, variety of stitches(针法）, and consummate craftsmanship. Its stitching is meticulously(细致的，一丝不苟的）skillful , coloration subtle(微妙的，精细的） and refined. Xiang Embroidery Producing area : around Changsha, Hunan Province. Characteristic : It is distinct for its starkly elegant black, white and gray coloration. Its emphasis is on contrasts of Light and Shade that highlight the pattern texture(质地，纹理） to give a three- dimensional（空间的，尺寸的） effect. Shu Embroidery Producing area : around Chengdu , Sichuan Province Characteristic : It is oldest known embroidery style in Chinese embroidery history. Its raw materials are satin and colored silk, its craftsmanship(技术，技艺）painstaking and refined. The emphasis is on even stitching, delicate coloration, and local flavor.
