There exists a wide-ranging use of politeness and polite language that have clearly demonstrated people’s fondness and importance of this particular linguistic device.??Politeness, a socio-cultural phenomenon in human communication, has been defined in diverse ways:Kochman interprets politeness as follows: polite conversation is?“a way of showing consideration for other people’s feelings, that is, not saying or doing anything that might unduly excite or arouse other people’s feelings. The?‘gentleman’s agreement’ is and was?‘you don’t do or say anything that might arouse my feelings, and I won’t do or say anything that might arouse yours.”1Therefore,?“the term?‘politeness’ may be generally defined as adequate social conduct and tactful consideration of others aiming to avoid interactional conflicts.”2From the above discussion, it is apparent that politeness is not simply a means of conveying information, but an equally important means of establishing, maintaining social bonds with others in communication. As a social phenomenon, in the English-speaking culture and the western world in general, politeness has been closely related to the behavior typical of a certain social location and a certain social group. To be polite means to live up to a set of conventionalized norms of behavior. Whereas, in modern Chinese, the equivalence of politeness is Limao(礼貌), which is believed to have evolved in history from the notion of Li(礼). Then we make clear that while the notion of politeness is universal, it has different origins and thus different connotations in different cultures.This paper aims to make a comparative study of politeness between Chinese and English, and according to these differences, making some suggestions for improving communication skills between the
