Occurs if items (words, phrases, clauses, even whole sentences) which ought to be parallel in form or content are not, the writing can be labelled “non-parallel”. Famous examples: I have nothing to offer but blood, sweat, toil and tears. The government of the people, by the people, for the people. Non-parallel construction (cntd) The interviewer wanted to know why Penny had answered the advertisement, her qualifications, and was she experienced. There are two choices of parallel words in this sentence: Using question words: starting with why, what, and whether OR Using the word her to describe the things related to Penny Non-parallel construction (cntd) Better sentence: The interviewer wanted to know why Penny had answered the advertisement, what her qualifications were, and whether she had experience. OR The interviewer wanted to know three things about Penny: her reason for answering the advertisement, her qualifications, and her experience. Non-parallel construction (cntd) I heard about his book, his job and when he went to town. Better sentence: I heard about his book, his job and his trip to town. Non-parallel construction (cntd) Good managers analyse a problem, collect data and alternatives are evaluated. Faulty comparison Two objectives within a comparison must be between two similar things or things in the same category. Sentence: Statistics show that the rate of accidents was lower than last year. Here ‘the rate of accidents’ is being compared with ‘year’ or ‘last year’
