In this story, Munro combines love assump- tions and realistic writing. Paying little attention to plotting or characterization, the story deconstructs and subverts the narrative form of traditional realist fiction. Juxtaposion of opposing voices constitutes the narrative tension in the novel. It also divides the plot into fragmentary narratives, presenting an aesthetic paradigm of decentralization and experi- 117 · · 当代外国文学 No. 2, 2015 mentation. This paper argues that updated realist elements exist in postmodernist narrative skills, and that postmodern dimensions in realist narration are Munro’s responses to cur- rent changing life, which reflects her efforts to find an appropriate writing form to express the complexity of life.
