The form er type of leachate recirculation m eans that the leachate is recirculated w ithin the refuse layers that generated the leachate, regardless of the stability of the refuse involved. The latter m eans that the leachate generated in one refu se layer is recirculated in another independent refu se layer, w ith higher stability and longer placem ent tmi e in the landfil.l Two types of recirculationm ay lead to different treatm ent efficiencies of the pollutants rem ovalsbecau se of the disparity of the refuse layers stabilization extent, besides the evaporation effects. In general, the po llutant rem ova l capability of the cross re circulation process is over that of hom ogenous recirculation, as the m ore stable refu se can act as an effective biofiltration reactor w hich has a high biodegradability to the pollutants present in the leachate.
