Abstract Urban sewage is a kind of excellent heat source whose low-temperature waste is available. Sewage source heat pump can make the best use of the exhaust heat in urban sewage for heating and cooling. It has obvious superiority in the first investment and running cost when compared with traditional HVAC systems, even with traditional heat pump systems. So it is very necessary to explore the development and application of the sewage source heat pump, especially when energy-saving is actively encouraged nowadays. The urban sewage’s flowing characteristic is an important problem when using it as cool and heat source. Nowadays, most of researchers have taken emphasize on the value and prospect of the sewage source heat pump, but paid little attention to the flowing characteristic, and this aspect has been lack of basic study. The flowing characteristic of the sewage source heat pump is a very important problem in the calculation of the system’s hydraulic and heat transfer calculation, and it is the key problem of the steady operation. Because of lacking of study in the flowing characteristic of the sewage source heat pump the design rule in the pipe and heat transfer equipment has not established. At the present time, urban sewage has got much attention because of the greatly widespread application. Actually the application tendency has already been in advance of the fundamental research. So accelerating the fundamental research in this aspect has the vital practical significance. The urban sewage contains lots of solid impurity, including silts of all dimensions and suspension fibre, and is a kind of solid-liquid two-phase and solid phase multi-component fluid. Besides, its microscopic flowing mechanism and velocity distribution in the pipe are very complex, especially the contamination’s diameter distributes broadly and irregularly, so it is very difficult for us to establish the precise description of physic-mathematic model.
