International players are building market platforms through combinations of strategic alliances and independent operations. Asia Pacific Breweries (“APB”) currently manufacture and sell “Tiger”, “Reeb” and “Anchor” brand beer in China, brewed in Shanghai and Hainan. Heineken brand beer is imported and sold through distributors. The Heineken – APB China Business Development Team (“CBD Team”) have defined a strategic vision for China, which seeks market leading positions in both premium and standard segments. The CBD Team will lead a group of internal and external resources to convert the vision into a strategic business development plan. This plan will be summarized into a White Paper which will be presented to the Boards of Asia Pacific Breweries and its shareholders. PwC have been asked to make a proposal to provide services to facilitate and assist in the preparation of the strategic business development plan. * Large market second only to the USA; annual consumption 23 million tons, growth rate has slowed down recently to about 5% - 6% per annum Over 80% consumption concentrated in 14 (of 31) provinces. South and East coastal areas are the most profitable regional markets Market is fragmented with over 400 brewers, many are small local brewers, around 10% of them have annual capacity over 100,000 tons Consolidation has been going on since late 1990s, three 1st tier players with annual sales volume of over 2 million tons have emerged: Tsingtao, the only national brand
