Abstract
Hull resistance performance is one of the important factors that affect the operation of the ship economy. We can significantly improve the energy efficiency of the ship through the optimization of the hull form. Most of the initial stages of the traditional hull design adopt the female transformation method, and strongly depend on the design experience and the type-line databases.
With the wide application of high-performance computers and the rapid development of computational fluid dynamics, CFD has become an emerging tool for the design and optimization of ship lines. In terms of the ship optimization based on CFD, parametric model is an essential process. Then, it requires a flexible and effective way to describe and modify the hull geometry. In this paper, the surface curvature was adopted to describe the hull.
Dolphins have a streamlined body, and the submarine derives from the imitation of fish and dolphins. Firstly, this paper searched for the information about dolphins, and then a three-dimensional model of the dolphin was established. The hydrodynamic performance of the dolphin model was studied by numerical analysis. Fluent software was applied in the numerical simulation. Thus, we obtained the flow field and resistance characteristics of the dolphin model.
Then, this paper built a three-dimensional model of the teardrop hull form, which was the same fineness ratio as the dolphin. We also acquired its resistance characteristics by numerical simulation. Under this, resistance characteristics of the dolphin and teardrop were compared. Results indicated that the drag coefficient of the dolphin was greater than the teardrop. In fact, dolphins swim with the low resistance. This study explained that the low resistance of dolphins was not only related to the streamlined body, but also attributed to itself as the organism, such as the special skin and the flexible body which were able to maintain laminar flow o
