暨南 暨南大学硕士学位论文 II II Abstract From a cross-cultural, trans-national, and inter-lingual perspective, this thesis is an exploration of four Chinese Hawaiian poets, Wing Tek Lum, Cathy Song, Eric Chock and Carolyn Lau, who have produced important works of Chinese Hawaiian poetry. All the four poets were born and raised in Hawaii. In their poetry, Hawaii is an island community surrounded by water and isolated from other lands, which unites Chinese Hawaiians together with strong local sensibility. Besides, mainstream cultures from the mainland of America and the mainland of China has also contributed to the cultural hybridity in Chinese Hawaiian poetry. Based on Homi Bhabha?s theory of cultural hybridity, this thesis explores how Chinese Hawaiian poets construct “the other” under the influence of the mainstream culture from America and China, and turn to trace “the self” in Hawaii Island. Then, they fulfill the reconstruction of their specific hybridized cultural identity in the “Third Space.” Besides, the linguistic hybridity and diverse traditions in Chinese Hawaiian poetry not only deconstruct the hegemonic and singular literary patterns of American mainstream, but also largely enrich the multicultural perspectives in American literature. It is the complexity and fluidity of Chinese Hawaiian poets? cultural identities that lead their works to transcend the borders between language and tradition, relocating in space and regenerating in time. Through the perspectives of postcolonialism and cultural studies, this thesis analyzes the characteristic of cultural hybridity in Chinese Hawaiian poetry. Through the survey of the ethnic and aesthetic features of Chinese Hawaiian poetry, it emphasizes the unique contribution made by Chinese Hawaiian poets to Chinese American literature.
