In much the same way that Burke and Santayana noted that those who cannot remember the past are bound to repeat it, Maria Duffy in Paul Ricoeur’s Pedagogy of Pardon suggests that those who do not meaningfully confront the past are bound to a fractured future. Duffy situates her work within the peace process of Northern Ireland and the reconciliation projects of South Africa (as part of the larger movement of Truth Commissions). She contends that the hermeneutical arc, as developed in Ricoeur’s latter writings, and the evangelical tradition have the potential to lead to a transfiguration capable of forging new relationships in communities raw from historical conflict.
